The 2020 New York Rangers, coached by David Quinn, lost the Qualifying Round after finishing the NHL regular season in 7th place in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division with a 37-28 record.

The season was suspended indefinitely on March 12, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On August 1, 2020, the NHL resumed play, which was organized with the remainder of the regular season canceled, and the top 12 teams in each conference (by points percentage) competing in a modified and expanded Stanley Cup playoffs.
The top four playoff teams in each conference played in a Seeding Round-Robin tournament against each other to determine the final playoff seeding. The next eight teams in each conference would play in a best-of-five Qualifying Round. The results of both of these rounds (not shown above) are listed below.
The winners of the Qualifying Round were then re-seeded and matched up against the top 4 seeds.
Pairings were again re-seeded after the second round.
The Eastern Conference played its early-round games at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, while the early rounds for the Western Conference, as well as the Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Finals, were played at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
