Denver Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett and offensive coordinator Justin Outten have an existing offensive philosophy, but they will also be sure to tailor their offense to strengths of quarterback Russell Wilson. - And behind every starter is a backup, ideally one with a similar skillset and playing style. Josh Johnson is an ideal fit for Denver. - Johnson’s not necessarily a huge dual-threat, but he’s excellent at buying time and extending plays when he needs to, similar to Wilson. - “The similarities in the pocket movements, the bootlegs, the understanding of plays, the drop-back passes, and the different varieties — I love it because it puts a lot of stress on the defense,” Johnson said at his introductory press conference on Monday. “Being able to attack the defense on the perimeter and the middle of the field — I just enjoy being in this system. To be able to get back into it, I think it’s going to be a great thing for all of us. - “I’m excited to see how we do it out here with Russ leading the way and us following right behind because all of our skillsets fit the mold of what this offense really needs — an athletic quarterback that can throw the ball down the field [along with] play action, buying time when you need it, and being a good decision maker. That’s pretty much why I’m excited, honestly. This is where my skillset is, and this where I think I can thrive most. I think that will reflect on tape as well.” - Johnson will have to compete with Brett Rypien for the backup job this summer but his experience in the NFL seemingly makes him the early favorite to win the job. Denver’s offseason program will begin in early April and training camp is expected to begin in late July. - Follow the Broncos Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - List - - Russell Wilson trade: Seahawks fan provides Seattle perspective for Broncos fans - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Broncos Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Broncos Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
