One year after defeating the Green Bay Packers 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII, the Denver Broncos returned to the NFL’s championship game to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-19 in Super Bowl XXXIII on Sunday, Jan. 31 1999. - Playing in the final game of his career, quarterback John Elway took home Super Bowl MVP honors after completing 18-of-29 passes for 336 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Elway also rushed three times for two yards and another score. - Elway later retired during the 1999 offseason and he was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2004. Three other members of Denver’s starting lineup that day later joined Elway in the Hall of Fame: tight end Shannon Sharpe, running back Terrell Davis and safety Steve Atwater. - Elway returned to the team as an executive in 2011 and he helped the Broncos reach two more Super Bowls, winning one in 2016. Elway’s contract is set to expire this spring, but he’s hoping to remain with the club as a minority owner. - - Gallery - Broncos throwback: 50 best photos from Super Bowl 50 - - - - - - view 50 images - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Broncos Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Broncos Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
