Tyson Ross, a right-handed pitcher known for his tall frame and powerful arm, began his Major League Baseball career with the Oakland Athletics. Drafted by the Athletics in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft, Ross made his debut in the major leagues on April 7, 2010. During his initial stint with Oakland, he displayed potential with his fastball-slider combination, though he faced challenges with consistency and injuries.
In 2013, Ross was traded to the San Diego Padres, a move that marked a turning point in his career. With the Padres, he found more stability and success on the mound. The 2014 season was particularly strong for Ross, as he earned his first and only All-Star selection. That year, he posted a 13-14 record with a 2.81 ERA and 195 strikeouts over 195.2 innings pitched. His performance solidified his role as a reliable starter in the Padres' rotation.
Ross continued to pitch effectively for San Diego in 2015, recording a 10-12 record with a 3.26 ERA and 212 strikeouts in 196 innings. However, his career faced a setback in 2016 when he suffered a shoulder injury that limited him to just one start that season. The injury required surgery, and Ross spent the remainder of the year and much of 2017 recovering.
In 2017, Ross signed with the Texas Rangers, but struggled to regain his pre-injury form. He finished the season with a 7.71 ERA over 49 innings. Following his stint with the Rangers, Ross returned to the Padres in 2018, where he showed glimpses of his previous effectiveness. That season, he recorded a 4.45 ERA in 22 starts before being claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals in August. With the Cardinals, Ross served as both a starter and reliever, contributing to their pitching staff down the stretch.
Ross signed with the Detroit Tigers for the 2019 season, but his time there was marred by injuries once again. He made just seven starts before being sidelined for the remainder of the year. After the 2019 season, Ross did not return to the major leagues, and his professional baseball career came to a close.
