Tom Gugliotta's journey in professional basketball began when he was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets. A forward standing 6 feet 10 inches tall, Gugliotta quickly demonstrated his skills on the court, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1993. His ability to score, rebound, and assist made him a valuable asset to his team.

After two seasons with the Bullets, Gugliotta was traded to the Golden State Warriors in 1994. His time with the Warriors was brief, as he was traded again within the same season to the Minnesota Timberwolves. It was with the Timberwolves that Gugliotta found a more stable role, becoming a key player for the team. During his tenure in Minnesota, he played alongside emerging star Kevin Garnett, and the duo helped lead the Timberwolves to their first playoff appearance in 1997.

Gugliotta's performance peaked during the 1996-1997 season when he averaged 20.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. His efforts were recognized with a selection to the 1997 NBA All-Star Game, marking the only All-Star appearance of his career. His versatility on the court allowed him to contribute in various aspects of the game, making him a reliable player for the Timberwolves.

In 1998, Gugliotta signed with the Phoenix Suns as a free agent. His initial seasons with the Suns were productive, but his career was soon hampered by injuries. A knee injury in the 1999-2000 season significantly affected his performance and playing time. Despite these setbacks, Gugliotta continued to play for the Suns until 2004, when he was traded to the Utah Jazz.

Gugliotta's stint with the Jazz was short-lived, and he soon moved to the Boston Celtics later in the 2004 season. His role with the Celtics was limited, and he played only a handful of games before signing with the Atlanta Hawks for the 2004-2005 season. With the Hawks, Gugliotta played his final NBA games, retiring at the end of the season.

Throughout his career, Gugliotta was known for his scoring ability, rebounding, and playmaking skills. He played a total of 13 seasons in the NBA, appearing in 763 games and averaging 13 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.
