Randy Carlyle's journey in the world of hockey began in Sudbury, Ontario, where he was born on April 19, 1956. His professional career took off when he was drafted 30th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. Carlyle, a defenseman known for his gritty playing style and leadership qualities, quickly made his presence felt on the ice.

Carlyle's NHL debut came with the Maple Leafs, where he played for two seasons. However, it was his trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1978 that marked a turning point in his career. During his time with the Penguins, Carlyle developed into a reliable defenseman, showcasing his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. His performance peaked in the 1980-81 season when he scored 83 points, earning him the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman.

In 1984, Carlyle was traded to the Winnipeg Jets, where he continued to be a steady presence on the blue line. Over the next several years, he became a cornerstone of the Jets' defense, serving as team captain and providing veteran leadership. Carlyle's playing career concluded with the Jets in 1993, after which he transitioned into coaching.

Carlyle's coaching career began in the minor leagues, where he honed his skills behind the bench. He served as an assistant coach for the Manitoba Moose in the International Hockey League (IHL) before taking on the head coaching role. His success in the IHL led to an opportunity in the NHL, where he joined the Washington Capitals as an assistant coach.

In 2005, Carlyle was appointed head coach of the Anaheim Ducks. Under his guidance, the Ducks achieved remarkable success, culminating in winning the Stanley Cup in 2007. Carlyle's coaching style, characterized by a focus on defensive discipline and physical play, resonated with the team and brought out the best in his players.

After a successful tenure with the Ducks, Carlyle returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs as head coach in 2011. His time with the Leafs was marked by ups and downs, including a playoff appearance in 2013. However, he was relieved of his duties in 2015.

Carlyle returned to the Ducks for a second stint as head coach in 2016. He led the team to the Western Conference Finals in his first season back, but after a disappointing start to the 2018-19 season, he was dismissed from his position.
