Mike Tice's journey in professional football began when he entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent. Born on February 2, 1959, in Bay Shore, New York, Tice attended the University of Maryland, where he played as a quarterback. However, his transition to the professional league saw him switch positions to tight end, a role that would define his playing career.
Tice's NFL career commenced with the Seattle Seahawks in 1981. Over the next few years, he established himself as a reliable tight end, known for his blocking abilities and occasional receiving skills. His tenure with the Seahawks spanned from 1981 to 1988, with a brief interlude in 1989 when he joined the Washington Redskins. However, he returned to the Seahawks later that year, finishing his playing career with them in 1991.
Throughout his time on the field, Tice was recognized for his physicality and understanding of the game, traits that would later serve him well in his coaching career. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Vikings in 1996. His knowledge of the game and leadership qualities quickly became apparent, and he was promoted to offensive line coach in 1997.
In 2001, Tice was named the interim head coach of the Vikings following the departure of Dennis Green. The following year, he was appointed as the head coach, a position he held until 2005. During his tenure, Tice worked to build a competitive team, leading the Vikings to a memorable playoff victory against the Green Bay Packers in the 2004 season. Despite challenges, his time as head coach was marked by efforts to develop young talent and instill a strong work ethic within the team.
After leaving the Vikings, Tice continued his coaching career with various teams, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, and Atlanta Falcons, primarily focusing on offensive line coaching. His extensive experience as both a player and coach provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the game, which he imparted to the players he mentored.
