The pinnacle of Hoyt's career came in 1983 when he won the American League Cy Young Award. That season, he achieved a remarkable 24-10 record with a 3.66 ERA, leading the league in wins. His ability to consistently throw strikes and avoid walks was a key factor in his success, as he issued only 31 walks in 260.2 innings pitched. Hoyt's efforts were instrumental in leading the White Sox to the American League West division title, their first postseason appearance since 1959. Although the team fell short in the American League Championship Series against the Baltimore Orioles, Hoyt's performance remained a highlight of the season.

In 1984, Hoyt continued to be a workhorse for the White Sox, pitching over 200 innings and maintaining a solid presence on the mound. However, his win-loss record dipped to 13-18, and his ERA rose to 4.47. Despite these setbacks, Hoyt's reputation as a dependable pitcher remained intact.

Following the 1984 season, Hoyt was traded to the San Diego Padres in a multi-player deal. In his first season with the Padres, he bounced back with a 16-8 record and a 3.47 ERA, earning a spot on the National League All-Star team. Unfortunately, Hoyt's career began to decline after the 1985 season. Injuries and off-field issues, including struggles with substance abuse, affected his performance and availability.
