Wilkes entered the NBA when he was drafted by the Golden State Warriors as the 11th overall pick in the 1974 NBA Draft. He quickly adapted to the professional level, earning the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 1975. His rookie season was marked by his contribution to the Warriors' championship victory, where his scoring ability and defensive prowess were on full display.
After three seasons with the Warriors, Wilkes signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1977. It was with the Lakers that he became an integral part of the team's success during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Playing alongside legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, Wilkes was a key component of the Lakers' "Showtime" era. His ability to score efficiently and play strong defense complemented the fast-paced, high-scoring style that the Lakers were known for.
Wilkes' performance in the 1980 NBA Finals is particularly memorable. In Game 6 against the Philadelphia 76ers, he scored 37 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, helping the Lakers clinch the championship. Despite Magic Johnson's standout performance in that game, Wilkes' contribution was crucial to the team's success. Throughout his time with the Lakers, he won three NBA championships (1980, 1982, and 1985), solidifying his reputation as a reliable and effective player in high-pressure situations.
In addition to his championship victories, Wilkes was selected to the NBA All-Star team three times (1976, 1981, and 1983). His smooth shooting style earned him the nickname "Silk," and his jump shot was considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the league. Wilkes was also known for his defensive skills, often tasked with guarding the opposing team's best players.
Injuries began to take a toll on Wilkes' career in the mid-1980s, leading to his eventual retirement. He played his final season with the Los Angeles Clippers in 1985-1986, bringing an end to a distinguished career that spanned over a decade. Wilkes finished his career with averages of 17.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, numbers that reflect his consistent performance on the court.
Jamaal Wilkes' contributions to the game were recognized when he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
