Jack Del Rio's journey in the world of football began as a player before transitioning into a coaching career that spanned several decades. Born on April 4, 1963, in Castro Valley, California, Del Rio first gained attention as a linebacker at the University of Southern California (USC). His college career was marked by his selection as a consensus All-American in 1984, which set the stage for his entry into the National Football League (NFL).
In the 1985 NFL Draft, Del Rio was selected in the third round by the New Orleans Saints. He spent two seasons with the Saints, where he began to establish himself as a reliable linebacker. In 1987, Del Rio joined the Kansas City Chiefs, further honing his skills and gaining valuable experience on the field. His tenure with the Chiefs was followed by a move to the Dallas Cowboys in 1989, where he played for one season.
Del Rio's playing career reached its peak during his time with the Minnesota Vikings, where he played from 1992 to 1995. As a Viking, he became known for his tackling ability and leadership on defense. Over his NFL career, Del Rio accumulated over 1,000 tackles, demonstrating his effectiveness as a defensive player. He retired from professional play after the 1995 season, leaving behind a solid legacy as a linebacker.
Transitioning from player to coach, Del Rio began his coaching career in 1997 as an assistant strength coach with the New Orleans Saints. His coaching acumen quickly became apparent, and he soon moved on to become the linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens in 1999. During his time with the Ravens, Del Rio was part of the coaching staff that led the team to a Super Bowl victory in the 2000 season, thanks in part to a historically strong defense.
In 2002, Del Rio took on the role of defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. Under his guidance, the Panthers' defense improved significantly, which helped him secure his first head coaching position with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003. Del Rio served as the head coach of the Jaguars for nine seasons, leading the team to two playoff appearances in 2005 and 2007. His tenure with the Jaguars ended in 2011, but his coaching career was far from over.
Del Rio returned to the role of defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos in 2012. His leadership contributed to the Broncos' defensive prowess, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance in the 2013 season. In 2015, Del Rio was appointed as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. During his time with the Raiders, he led the team to a playoff berth in the 2016 season, their first since 2002. However, after a less successful 2017 season, Del Rio was released from his position as head coach.
