George Steinbrenner was an American businessman best known for his ownership of the New York Yankees baseball team. Born in 1930 in Rocky River, Ohio, Steinbrenner attended Williams College before serving in the U.S. Air Force. He then went on to earn a master's degree in physical education from Ohio State University.


In 1973, Steinbrenner led a group of investors in purchasing the Yankees, and he quickly became known for his hands-on management style and aggressive approach to team building. Under his ownership, the Yankees won seven World Series titles and became one of the most successful franchises in baseball history.


Despite his successes, Steinbrenner was also known for his controversial behavior, including his outspoken criticism of players and managers, his tendency to fire and hire personnel frequently, and his involvement in several high-profile scandals. He was temporarily banned from baseball in the 1990s for making illegal campaign contributions, but he was later reinstated.


Outside of baseball, Steinbrenner was involved in several business ventures, including the shipping company he inherited from his father. He was also known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in the Tampa Bay area, where he lived for many years.
