Although her son-in-law, William E. Benswanger, wears the title of club president, Mrs. Barney Dreyfuss occupies an important position in the conduct of the club's affairs for she is chairman of the board. Which recalls, there are few women identified with the direction of major league baseball organizations. Others who boast executive posts are Mrs. Gerald P. Nugent, vice-president of the Phillies; Miss Margaret Donahue, secretary of the Cubs and Miss Dorothy Hummel, assistant to President Will Harridge, of the American League. Mrs. Dreyfuss is the widow of the former well known owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates who died Feb. 5, 1932.
As Florence Wolf, the youngest of three children, she was born March 31, 1872, in Louisville, educated in the Blue Grass metrop- olis and married Mr. Dreyfuss, then owner of the Louisville Colonels, on Oct. 16, 1894. After moving to Pittsburgh, Jan. 1, 1900, Mr. Dreyfuss merged the Louisville and Pittsburgh baseball franchises.
Their son, Samuel Wolf Dreyfuss, former vice-president of the Pirates, passed away Feb. 22, 1931, at the age of 34. A daughter, Eleanor Fanny Dreyfuss, born in Louisville, April 30, 1898, was married in 1925 to Mr. Benswanger.
