Eric Hinske's journey through Major League Baseball began when he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round of the 1998 MLB Draft. However, it was with the Toronto Blue Jays that he first made a name for himself. Hinske debuted in the major leagues in 2002 with the Blue Jays, quickly establishing himself as a promising talent. That year, he played third base and impressed many with his offensive capabilities, earning the American League Rookie of the Year award after hitting .279 with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs.
Following his standout rookie season, Hinske continued to be a regular presence in the Blue Jays' lineup. Although his performance fluctuated over the next few years, he remained a valuable player due to his ability to play multiple positions, including first base and the outfield. In 2006, Hinske was traded to the Boston Red Sox, where he contributed as a utility player. His time with the Red Sox was marked by his adaptability and willingness to fill various roles as needed.
In 2007, Hinske joined the Tampa Bay Rays, where he played a significant role in the team's surprising run to the World Series in 2008. During that season, he hit 20 home runs and provided veteran leadership to a young Rays team. Although the Rays ultimately fell to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, Hinske's contributions were an integral part of the team's success.
Hinske's career continued with a move to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009, followed by a mid-season trade to the New York Yankees. With the Yankees, he added another World Series appearance to his resume, as the team went on to win the championship that year. Hinske's role with the Yankees was primarily as a bench player, but his experience and ability to deliver in clutch situations were valuable assets.
In 2010, Hinske signed with the Atlanta Braves, where he spent three seasons. During his time with the Braves, he was known for his pinch-hitting prowess and his role as a mentor to younger players. Hinske's leadership and experience were highly regarded within the Braves organization, and he played a part in the team's playoff appearances in 2010 and 2012.
Hinske concluded his playing career with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013.
