Edinson Volquez, a right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic, embarked on his Major League Baseball (MLB) journey with the Texas Rangers. Signed as an amateur free agent in 2001, Volquez made his MLB debut on August 30, 2005. His early years with the Rangers were marked by a struggle to find consistency, as he bounced between the majors and minors, trying to harness his raw talent and powerful arm.
In 2007, Volquez was traded to the Cincinnati Reds, a move that proved to be a turning point in his career. The 2008 season was a breakout year for him. He earned a spot on the National League All-Star team and finished the season with a 17-6 record and a 3.21 ERA, striking out 206 batters in 196 innings. His performance that year placed him fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting, highlighting his potential as a top-tier pitcher.
However, Volquez's career faced challenges following his stellar 2008 season. In 2009, he underwent Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season and a significant portion of 2010. Upon his return, Volquez struggled to regain his pre-surgery form, leading to a trade to the San Diego Padres in 2011. His tenure with the Padres was marked by inconsistency, as he battled control issues and fluctuating performance.
In 2013, Volquez signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers but was released later that year. He then joined the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he experienced a resurgence. Under the guidance of the Pirates' coaching staff, Volquez refined his mechanics and posted a 13-7 record with a 3.04 ERA in 2014. His efforts helped the Pirates secure a spot in the postseason, where he started the National League Wild Card Game.
Volquez's journey continued with the Kansas City Royals, signing a two-year contract before the 2015 season. He played a crucial role in the Royals' rotation, contributing to their successful campaign that culminated in a World Series championship. Volquez started Game 1 and Game 5 of the World Series against the New York Mets, delivering solid performances that helped the Royals capture their first title in 30 years.
After his stint with the Royals, Volquez joined the Miami Marlins in 2017. On June 3, 2017, he achieved a career milestone by throwing a no-hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a testament to his enduring skill and determination. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to an elbow injury, leading to another surgery and a lengthy recovery process.
Volquez returned to the Texas Rangers in 2019, coming full circle in his MLB career. Despite battling injuries, he provided veteran leadership and experience to the Rangers' pitching staff. In 2020, Volquez announced his retirement from professional baseball, concluding a career that spanned over a decade and included moments of brilliance, adversity, and triumph.
