Drew Hutchison, a right-handed pitcher, began his Major League Baseball career with the Toronto Blue Jays. Drafted by the Blue Jays in the 15th round of the 2009 MLB Draft, Hutchison worked his way through the minor leagues, showcasing his potential as a starting pitcher. He made his MLB debut on April 21, 2012, against the Kansas City Royals. In his rookie season, Hutchison displayed flashes of promise, although his season was cut short due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.
After missing the entire 2013 season to recover, Hutchison returned to the Blue Jays' rotation in 2014. That year, he made 32 starts, finishing with an 11-13 record and a 4.48 ERA. His ability to strike out batters was evident, as he recorded 184 strikeouts over 184.2 innings. The following season, in 2015, Hutchison continued to be a part of the Blue Jays' starting rotation. Despite some inconsistencies, he ended the season with a 13-5 record and a 5.57 ERA over 28 starts. The Blue Jays made it to the postseason that year, but Hutchison did not appear in any playoff games.
In 2016, Hutchison's role with the Blue Jays diminished, and he spent a significant portion of the season in the minor leagues. In August of that year, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal that brought Francisco Liriano to Toronto. Hutchison's time with the Pirates was primarily spent in the minors, and he made only a few appearances for the major league team.
Hutchison became a free agent after the 2017 season and signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018. He made the Phillies' Opening Day roster but was designated for assignment in May. Shortly after, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, though he did not make any major league appearances for them. Later that year, Hutchison joined the Texas Rangers, where he made a handful of starts and relief appearances.
In 2019, Hutchison signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees but did not make it to the major league roster. He spent the 2020 season with the American Association's Milwaukee Milkmen, an independent league team, as the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the minor league season.
Hutchison returned to the MLB in 2021, signing a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers. He was called up to the majors in August and made several appearances as both a starter and reliever. His performance with the Tigers marked a return to the big leagues after a few years of bouncing around different teams and leagues.
