Despite not being selected in the draft, Demps found opportunities to play in the NBA. He signed with the Golden State Warriors for the 1993-1994 season, appearing in a handful of games. His time in the NBA was brief, but it opened doors for him internationally. Demps played overseas in countries such as France, Greece, and Croatia, gaining valuable experience and honing his skills in diverse basketball environments.
In addition to his international stints, Demps also played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), a league that served as a stepping stone for many players seeking to break into or return to the NBA. His time in the CBA further demonstrated his adaptability and understanding of the game, traits that would serve him well in his post-playing career.
Transitioning from player to executive, Demps found a new calling in basketball management. He joined the San Antonio Spurs organization, initially working in the front office. His role with the Spurs allowed him to learn from one of the most respected franchises in the NBA, known for its strong organizational culture and success on the court.
In 2010, Demps was appointed as the general manager of the New Orleans Hornets, a position he held for nearly a decade. During his tenure, the team underwent significant changes, including a rebranding to the New Orleans Pelicans. As general manager, Demps was responsible for overseeing player acquisitions, trades, and draft selections, navigating the complexities of building a competitive team in a small market.
Demps' time with the Pelicans was marked by efforts to build around star player Anthony Davis, whom the team drafted in 2012. He orchestrated several trades and signings aimed at complementing Davis' talents, striving to elevate the team's performance in the highly competitive Western Conference. Despite challenges, including injuries to key players and the ever-evolving landscape of the NBA, Demps remained focused on his vision for the team.
In 2019, Demps' tenure as general manager came to an end.
