Mr. Evans came to Washington in 1966 to head the RKO bureau after a long career as a journalist in New York. He served as president of the White House Correspondents Association in 1981-82 and as vice president of the Washington Press Club in 1972-73.
In the 1960's, Mr. Evans was producer and moderator of ''Ladies of the Press,'' a weekly interview program. He also worked as a reporter and associate producer for the NBC ''Today'' program and was a reporter for The New York World-Telegran, The New York Post, The New York Herald-Tribune and The Brooklyn Eagle.
