Brad Hand, a left-handed pitcher, began his Major League Baseball career with the Florida Marlins, who later became the Miami Marlins. Drafted in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft, Hand made his MLB debut on June 7, 2011. Initially, he was used as a starting pitcher, but his early years with the Marlins were marked by inconsistency. Over the next few seasons, Hand oscillated between the starting rotation and the bullpen, struggling to find a permanent role on the team.

In 2016, Hand's career took a turn when he was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres. It was with the Padres that he transitioned into a full-time relief pitcher, a move that proved beneficial for both Hand and the team. His performance improved significantly, and he quickly became one of the most reliable arms in the Padres' bullpen. That year, he appeared in 82 games, posting a 2.92 ERA and striking out 111 batters over 89.1 innings. His efforts did not go unnoticed, as he was named to the National League All-Star team in 2017.

Hand's success continued in 2017, where he further established himself as a dominant reliever. He recorded a 2.16 ERA and notched 21 saves, earning another All-Star selection. The Padres recognized his value and signed him to a three-year contract extension in January 2018. However, midway through the 2018 season, Hand was traded to the Cleveland Indians as part of a deal that sent top prospect Francisco Mejรญa to San Diego.

With the Indians, Hand continued to excel in the closer role. He finished the 2018 season with a combined 32 saves between the Padres and Indians, along with a 2.75 ERA. In 2019, Hand was once again named an All-Star, marking his third consecutive selection. He finished the season with 34 saves and a 3.30 ERA, solidifying his reputation as one of the league's top closers.

The 2020 season, shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, saw Hand lead the American League in saves with 16, while maintaining a 2.05 ERA. Despite his performance, the Indians declined his option for the 2021 season, making him a free agent. Hand signed with the Washington Nationals for the 2021 season, but his tenure with the team was brief. He was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in July 2021, and after a short stint, he was designated for assignment.

In August 2021, Hand was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets, where he finished the season.
