Bob Geren's journey in professional baseball began when he was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 1979 MLB Draft. However, it was with the New York Yankees that he would make his major league debut. Geren, a catcher, played his first MLB game on September 14, 1988, with the Yankees. Over the next few years, he served as a reliable presence behind the plate for the team.
During his time with the Yankees, Geren was known for his defensive skills and ability to handle pitchers. He played with the team until 1991, appearing in a total of 307 games. While his batting average was modest, his contributions to the team's defense and his work with the pitching staff were valued. After his stint with the Yankees, Geren spent a brief period with the Cincinnati Reds organization but did not appear in any major league games for them.
Following his playing career, Geren transitioned into coaching and management. He began his managerial career in the minor leagues, working within the Boston Red Sox organization. His leadership skills and understanding of the game eventually led him to a role with the Oakland Athletics. In 2007, Geren was named the manager of the Athletics, a position he held until 2011. During his tenure, he guided the team through several challenging seasons, focusing on developing young talent and maintaining a competitive squad.
Geren's managerial career with the Athletics was marked by a focus on building a strong team dynamic and fostering player development. Although the team did not reach the postseason during his time as manager, his efforts in nurturing young players were recognized within the organization. After parting ways with the Athletics in 2011, Geren continued his career in baseball by joining the coaching staff of the New York Mets as a bench coach.
In addition to his role with the Mets, Geren later became a bench coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he worked under manager Dave Roberts. His experience and knowledge of the game have made him a respected figure in the coaching community, contributing to the success of the teams he has been a part of.
