1950 Boston Red Sox Team History and Logo Overview in Vintage Article
The Boston Red Sox, established in 1901, were initially named the Somersets after their owner, Charles W. Somers. Before adopting their current name in 1907, the team had several nicknames, including Puritans and Plymouth Rocks. Early sports writers referred to the team as the Speed Boys. The Red Stockings, in use until 1907, were worn by all Boston National League teams. In that year, Fred Tenney, manager of the Red Sox, expressed his intention to drop the red stockings due to concerns that colored stockings could cause leg injuries. Peter F. Kelley, a baseball writer for the Boston Journal, criticized Tenney's decision to abandon the traditional red stockings associated with the National League.
