Boston Braves: History and Evolution of a Vintage Baseball Team
The Boston Braves, a Major League Baseball team, received their nickname through the suggestion of John Montgomery Ward in 1912, when James E. Gaffney, affiliated with Tammany Hall, became the club president. Prior to adopting the Braves name, the team was known as the Doves, a title linked to owners George B. and John E. C. Dovey. The team also had other nicknames, such as the Red Caps and Beaneaters. In 1936, James A. Robert Quinn ascended to the presidency of the club, and the name Bees was adopted after a vote by sports writers and fans. However, following a change in ownership structure, including Quinn's involvement, the stockholders chose to revert to the Braves moniker in April 1941.
