While basketball in the traditional strongholds around Philadelphia was in a period of instability and adjustment, the upstart Philadelphia League was, for all practical purposes, merely a minor league in its first year. After then National Basketball League failed in 1904, the Philadelphia League was able to attract enough quality players that it could be viewed as a true major league.
