The Detroit Red Wings finished in first place again, becoming the first team with more than 100 points. Gordie Howe led the NHL in goals and assists, while goalie Terry Sawchuk won the Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie. Sawchuk set a record for most wins by a goaltender, as he was in net for all of Detroit's 44 victories.
Toronto wasn't that far behind, with 41 wins and 95 points. The Maple Leafs then eliminated the Boston Bruins in five games and the Montreal Canadiens upset the Red Wings in a six-game semifinal.
All five games of the final Stanley Cup series went into overtime, with Toronto winning four of them. It was the team's fifth Stanley Cup championship in seven years.
