The St. Louis Eagles went out of business and their players were dispersed to other NHL teams in a special draft. The Eagles had operated in St. Louis for just one season; previously, the franchise had been called the Ottawa Senators.
On the ice, the Detroit Red Wings led the NHL with 24 wins and 56 points, while the Montreal Maroons were right behind them with 22 wins and 54 points. Detroit goalie Normie Smith had a sensational series in the meeting of the division champions. He shut out the Maroons in the first game of the series, the longest in NHL history, which Detroit finally won with a goal at 16:30 of the sixth overtime period. Then he recorded another shutout in another 1-0 win, and finally gave up a goal in the third game, but his teammates scored two to win it.
The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the New York Americans to reach the Stanley Cup finals for the fourth time in five years, but Detroit prevailed. It was the first Stanley Cup for the Red Wings, who were managed and coached by Jack Adams. The trophy for NHL Coach of the Year, inaugurated in 1974, is named for him.
