The NHL's expansion into the United States continued with the addition of the New York Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Americans replaced the Hamilton Tigers and took over most of the former team's players, but it was not a franchise move as such.
The Montreal Maroons finished in second place, but beat third-place Pittsburgh and the first-place Ottawa Senators to advance into the Stanley Cup finals.
With the move of the Regina franchise to Portland, Oregon, the Western Canada Hockey League dropped the 'Canada' from its name. The Victoria Cougars, who had won the Stanley Cup the previous year, finished only third in the WHL but beat Saskatoon and Edmonton to win the league's championship.
In the last Stanley Cup playoff to involve a team from outside the NHL, Montreal won three of four games against Victoria.
