Recap
The second-place Montreal Canadiens won the league's championship playoff, beating the first-place Ottawa Senators, 1-0 and 4-2.
Another second-place team, Vancouver, upset Seattle to win the Pacific Coast Hockey Association championship, while first-place Calgary won the Western Canada Hockey League playoff series.
The owner of the Canadiens, Leo Dandurand, wanted Vancouver and Calgary to meet in a playoff to determine which would play his team for the Stanley Cup. But Frank Patrick, president of the PCHA, refused to go along with that idea, so both Western champions went east for the playoffs.
That turned out to be no problem for the Canadiens, who swept both Vancouver and Calgary to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since the formation of the NHL in 1917.
Dr. David Hart, father of Montreal coach-manager Cecil Hart, donated a trophy to be presented to the league's Most Valuable Player. Frank Nighbor of Ottawa was the first winner.
