Gordie Howe led the NHL in goals and assists, while goalie Terry Sawchuk won the Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie. Sawchuk set a record for most wins by a goaltender, as he was in net for all of Detroit's 44 victories.
Toronto wasn't that far behind, with 41 wins and 95 points. The Maple Leafs then eliminated the Boston Bruins in five games and the Montreal Canadiens upset the Red Wings in a six-game semifinal.
